A man arrested on suspicion of the murder of a fisherman in Walton has been released on bail.

A murder investigation was launched on Friday after a body of a man in his 40s was pulled from the Thames on Thursday near Waterside Drive.

Concerns had been raised for the safety of a missing man who, it was believed, had been seen fishing, according to Surrey Police.

A post-mortem examination carried out on Friday concluded he had died from head trauma.

A 25-year-old man from Long Ditton was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder, and was released on bail later that day until September 29.

Surrey Police said that although the man was yet to be formally identified, his next of kin had been told.

Detective Superintendent Adam Hibbert said: "This was an appalling incident where the victim sustained significant, and ultimately fatal, head injuries.

“A detailed and extensive investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice.

“The area is popular with fishermen and dog walkers and I would urge anyone who was in the area on Thursday and may have seen or heard anything out of the ordinary to contact Surrey Police as a matter of urgency.

"Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this extremely difficult time and on their behalf we are continuing to ask that their privacy is respected."
