A murder investigation has been launched after a fisherman was found dead in the Thames at Walton.
Surrey Police officers went to the riverside near Waterside Drive yesterday after concerns for the safety of a missing man who was thought to have been fishing in the area at the time.
The man’s body was discovered by Surrey Fire and Rescue at about 4.45pm. He had suffered head trauma, a post-mortem examination found this afternoon.
Surrey Police said formal identification of the man is yet to take place.
Detective Superintendent Adam Hibbert said: "The investigation is still in the early stages and officers are carrying out a number of enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.
"A cordon is currently in place while a detailed forensic examination of the scene is carried out.
"Our thoughts are very much with the family of the victim and family liaison officers are providing support to them at this time. On their behalf we ask that their privacy is respected."
Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting Operation Briar, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
