Elmbridge councillors face a battle to retain their seats in May’s elections as the nominees for each ward were published today.

From Janurary: Elmbridge council set to lose a fifth of its councillors following official boundary review

Plans were made to slash councillor numbers from 60 to 48 and the number of wards from 22 to 16 after an eight-week boundary review by the Local Boundary Commission.

Three councillors will run in each ward to “ensure the council can perform its roles and responsibilities effectively”.

The elections on May 5 will decide who will represent the 16 new wards.

The new boundaries notably trimmed large portions of the Hersham North and South wards, with large areas set to be represented by Weybridge, Cobham and Esher councillors.

Current Conservative Molesey councillors, Steve Bax and Peter Szanto, will stand again in the elections along with Dr Debi Oliver, a former GP and ex-councillor.

A joint statement said: They can offer genuine influence and clout for Molesey within the Conservative controlled Elmbridge and Surrey councils, as well as working in close partnership with MP Dominic Raab.

“If elected Steve, Peter and Debi are pledged to address parking issues close to Hampton Court Station and in the wider ward, to defend Molesey Hospital from closure and keep the pressure on Heathrow over aircraft noise.”

Thames Ditton and Weston Green Residents’ Association councillor Karen Randolph said her main priorities for the area and the borough in general would be planning, protection of green spaces and the improvement of accessibility to healthcare.

She said: “We’ve got to find a way of doing this differently. There have to be changes and a lot of people understand that.

“The demand [for planning] is a major concern, to maintain the quality of life for the people living here and for the environment.”

Walton Conservative Christine Elmer said her three main priorities for the area would be protecting the quality of life in Walton and the greenbelt from overdevelopment, working with the council for better quality services that residents have “come to expect”, and to continue to be “a strong voice” for Walton South and post regular newsletters, e-bulletins and social media posts.

On why she should be re-elected, she said: “I have 10 years experience as a councillor, I have served on Cabinet for eight of those years, and been an active and vocal champion in promoting, supporting and protecting Walton.”
