Firefighters have been called to a large fire at a house in Sutton.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen rising from the three-storey terraced house in Devonshire Road this morning.

The roof the house has been severely damaged by the flames, which spread onto a nearby property.

London Fire Brigade was called at 11.10am and sent four engines and 21 firefighters.

Paramedics and police have also attended.

Brad Clarke, 24, whose parents live at the house, said: "I got a call from my dad telling me to get down from work. When I got here there was black smoke coming out and firefighters putting it out.

"I don't know what caused it and I'm just relieved everyone is safe, which is the main thing. It's devastating though."

Yanan Yang, who lives in nearby Langley Park Road, said: "I was cutting my lawn when I saw the black smoke.

"I called 999 because my friends live three doors down from where the fire is.

"I saw them come out with their baby, so I'm relieved that they're safe, but I can't get to them because of the tape.

"The landlord is in tears apparently. It's just awful."

The cause of the fire is not yet known, said London Fire Brigade.
