A post-mortem into the death of a woman found dead in West Molesey this week says she died from multiple blows to the head.

From Tuesday: West Molesey murder victim named locally as 50-year-old antiques dealer Robyn Mercer

A spokeswoman from Surrey Police said that although formal identification has yet to take place, they believe the woman to be 50-year-old antiques dealer Robyn Mercer.

A 52-year old man arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday remains in custody.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to Walton Road at 8am on Monday to reports of an assault after a member of the public raised the alarm, but were unable to revive Ms Mercer.

A large area of the green and Abbey Walk was cordoned off with police tape as forensic teams and police dogs investigated.

Ms Mercer’s family have been informed of her death and forensic enquiries are continuing today.

One resident said: “It’s quite scary really. I didn’t notice anything until I went out.”

Alan Watkinson, 75, who lives near the edge of the cordoned off area, said: “My wife took the dog out at 7am this morning but didn’t see anything. It’s a bit bizarre. My wife’s a bit shocked.”

He added that police had told residents they would be at the site for a further two to three days.

Another resident said: “We don’t get murders round here.”

Facebook user Tracy Goddard said: "Things like this don't happen in Molesey.... or so we all think. Horrible, just horrible. My thoughts go out to the victim's family."
