A mare and her foal have been killed in a crash this morning in Molesey.

A van is said to have crashed into the pair, killing both, just after 6am this morning when the ponies managed to get loose from a nearby field.

Two more horses are said to be on the loose after the cream-coloured mare and her black and white spotted foal were struck by the van near the Texaco garage in Molesey Road.

The driver of the van was said to be unhurt in the crash.

One nearby resident who saw the aftermath of the crash said “it was quite upsetting”.

Another resident of nearby Hurtwood Road in Walton struggled to hold back tears as she said: “As dog walkers we’ve watched these foals grow from last spring.”

She added that someone may have left the gates open to a nearby field, which leads on to Molesey Road.

She said: “Whoever did it I hope they realise the consequences of what they’ve done.

“A small minority actually think it’s funny to break the locks.”

Only two weeks ago residents in Hurtwood Road woke to find four horses from nearby fields on their front lawns.

A spokeswoman from Surrey Police said they had received reports of horses in the road at 6am, and that shortly afterwards a crash had then killed the two horses.

She added: “The road remains closed while recovery of the horses and the vehicle is underway.”
