Two horses died and four people were hospitalised after a crash which closed the A3 in both directions this morning.

Three cars, two loose horses and a motorcycle transporting blood were involved in the crash which happened between the Hook Underpass and Esher Common at about 3.40am.

The recipient of the blood carried by the motorcyclist was identified and it was successfully delivered to Frimley Park Hospital.

Surrey Police said officers were still on the A3 at the point of the crash just after 5.30am, and asked drivers to find alternative routes.

The South East Coast Ambulance took four people to St George's Hospital for serious injuries and treated two others for minor injuries. 

The northbound carriageway of the A3 going towards Hook opened at about 9am, but the southbound stretch of road was still closed.

Long delays were expected up to 45 minutes from each end with congestion to A245 (Painshill/ Cobham) and to A2043 (Malden Junction).

Diversions can be found through Hinchley Wood and Esher.

Road closures are expected to be lifted at about lunchtime.
