Surrey schools close to those in London are being denied extra funding that their London neighbours receive, despite some schools being just streets apart.
London boroughs bordering Surrey receive up to £900 a pupil more in Government funding, as city schools are deemed to have more pressures placed on them.
Surrey County Council is arguing that the Department for Education should strike up a similar deal for those 10 miles within London boroughs, “because they face similar pressures and have pupils with similar needs”.
According to figures from Surrey County Council, Surrey schools received £4,301 a pupil in Government funding this year.
In comparison, London borough of Hounslow schools received £5,203 and Croydon schools received £4,829 a pupil.
Councillor Linda Kemeny, cabinet member for schools, skills and educational achievement, said: “We do all we can to move funds around so we give more help to pupils in disadvantaged areas, but our ability to do this is limited because we receive hundreds of pounds less a pupil across the board than London boroughs bordering the county.”
The Government is set to announce its spending review next month.
