A petition against a second attempt at gaining planning permission for a waste treatment site in Walton has garnered more than 1,500 signatures ahead of an Elmbridge Council meeting.
The campaign by councillors and residents alike titled Weylands No Way has seen 1,583 signatures on petitionbuzz.com lobbying determining authority Surrey County Council on the application to reject the development set for Lyon Road at a meeting likely to be held in January.
The petition, which opened on February 16, aims to see an “autoclave and anaerobic digestion facility” which will compress waste in a pressure chamber, rejected when it comes to a final decision in several months by the county council.
Developers Clean Power Properties Ltd and Bridge Court Holdings Ltd also propose to build offices, a staff welfare and education centre, a 6,000 sq m recycling facility and a waste recycling area.
Residents have expressed concern over odour that could be emitted from the site, which is expected to be in the middle of a residential area.
Mick Flannigan, of Rydens Road, said: “Wherever anaerobic digesters have been permitted elsewhere, they have invariably caused smells and contamination and have blighted whole areas.”
Comments on the application can be made until Monday, November 9.
