Trams will now be running between Wimbledon station and Croydon again as a new platform was unveiled yesterday by former transport minister and Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond.
From June: New platform at Wimbledon station set to increase tram frequency
Passengers have had to walk to Dundonald Road tram stop to pick up services to and from Croydon while work was going on, but Wimbledon has now been re-opened.
A tram sits at the new platform at Wimbledon station, above.
Transport for London (TfL) said the new platform will mean four extra trams can run on the line, meaning 12 more trams every hour between Wimbledon and west Croydon from next year.
This will start from spring 2016.
Mr Hammond said: "The new tram platform at Wimbledon station is the latest of a growing list of local transport improvements.
"The increased frequency of services will make more jobs and opportunities available to local people and also help attract more business and investment into Wimbledon itself."
The work was part of TfL’s transport investment programme, which has seen improvements made across the network, including additional track between Mitcham Junction and Beddington Lane which allows trams to travel in both directions simultaneously allowing for more frequent and faster journeys.
