Residents are furious at plans to expand controlled parking permit zones around New Malden High Street.

Permit parking areas are already enforced in six streets in New Malden, with businesses having had concerns these zones would deter potential customers.

But now there are further worries as Kingston Council plans to introduce zones in six more residential areas surrounding the high street and Coombe Road.

Retired financial analyst Jim Fitzgerald, 67, of Alverstone Road, said: “More people will be chasing fewer spaces and you may not be able to get a parking space outside your own home. I have two daughters with children who live in Kingston who have received parking tickets for simple mistakes with the permits.”

Some council parking contracts expire within the next year. The council has appealed to residents to complete an online survey asking how parking services can be improved.

Councillor Terry Paton said: “It’s completely up to the people; we’ve had plenty of responses and we’ll look at them before making a decision.”

Elinor Parker, 74, of Alric Avenue, believes residents will unite in opposition to the additional zones, and has even put a poster outside her house in protest.

She said: “Both my neighbours and everyone I speak to are against the idea. If anybody wants to come and visit they won’t be able to park here.

“It’s going to cost a lot of money and at the moment there is no problem, so why change it?”

Complete the survey online at kingston.gov.uk/consultations where you will also automatically enter a draw for a £100 John Lewis voucher.
