Two Kingston police officers have been assaulted after stopping a driver who was using his mobile phone.

The attack happened yesterday with officers sustaining a sprained ankle, swollen knee, bruises and cuts between them.

Both of the officers involved were back on patrol today.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault and driving while using a mobile phone.

Borough Commander Glenn Tunstall said: "Unfortunately due to the unpredictable and dangerous role they undertake this sometimes results in them getting injured.

“Thankfully on this occasion the officers were not more seriously hurt and it fills me with immense pride that despite the trauma and the injuries they did receive yesterday, they have both reported for duty today.

“I am sure all the communities of Kingston join me in thanking our police officers for everything they do to keep us safe and also share my pride in the professionalism they display on a daily basis."

Back in June another Kingston officer received serious injuries when his foot was run over as a suspected drug dealer sped off in a car.

A 22-year-old man was arrested last night and charged with assault on a police officer, handling stolen goods and driving without due care and attention in relation to the confrontation.
