The elderly woman hit by a car in Surbiton last week died in hospital on Monday, after suffering serious head injuries.

The 80-year-old woman was hit by a blue Rover as she was crossing Claremont Road on Wednesday, January 28. Onlookers said she was lying unconscious and bleeding in the road.

Simona Mocanu, manager of Amandine coffee shop in Surbiton, said: "She was lying there for quite some time. She was still and had a bleeding head. There were a lot of people around but it seemed to take a long time for the ambulance to arrive."

An air ambulance, a ground ambulance and a fast response car from London Ambulance Service arrived on the scene just before noon.

London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to Claremont Road at 11.46am to reports of a road traffic accident involving a car and pedestrian.

"We sent an ambulance and fast response car to the scene. In addition we sent a team from the air ambulance consisting of a trauma trained doctor and paramedic. The first vehicle arrived in approximately six minutes."

Paramedics and a trauma-trained doctor treated the woman, before taking her to St George's Hospital, Tooting.

Claremont Road was closed outside Waitrose in both directions until 3pm that day. Witness Simon Harris said: "All buses were on diversion and it created a lot of confusion for travelling members of the public."

The post mortem is taking place on Wednesday, February 7, and the matter is being investigated by the collision investigation unit at Hampton. Anyone with information can call 020 8941 9011 to speak to DS Tony Tobin.

The woman will not be named until Friday, when an inquest is due to open. >
