Hundreds gathered around the borough to remember those who fell in Britain's conflicts past and present, on the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.

A service at All Saints Church in Kingston was led by Bishop Richard Cheetham and Rev Jonathan Wilkes, while in Surbiton Rev Bonni-Belle Pickard urged those present "to be thankful for the freedom and justice that was won for us and the world, and to acknowledge our debt of gratitude."

Kingston and Surbiton MP Edward Davey said: "It was an amazing and wonderful turnout by the local community.

"I think it reflects the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War.

"That is at the centre of people's minds, and you add to that what is happening with our troops in Afghanistan and elsewhere, I think people want to show their support."
