There will be an extra poignancy to this year’s Remembrance Day in Kingston, as four services are held to remember the soldiers who gave their lives.

Services will take place on Sunday in Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and Chessington, as the country remembers not only the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, but also marks 100 years since the conflict began in 1914.

A procession from Guildhall at 10.37am will open Kingston’s service, leading to the war memorial by 10.45am for the laying of wreaths and a short service.

This will be followed by a march past Guildhall at noon.

New Malden’s service at the war memorial will run from 9.45am to 10.15am.

The service at Surbiton will take place at the war memorial in Ewell Road from 10.45am to 11.30am, with the parade beginning at the Surbiton Royal British Legion.

Chessington’s service will take place at the war memorial at the Royal British Legion, in Church Lane, at 10.45am, followed by a service at 11.15am at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, in Church Lane.

Poppy sellers will be raising money for the Royal British Legion – including at Sainsbury’s, in Sury Basin, Kingston.

Poppy vendors will be at the store on both Saturday and Sunday and the supermarket will also be selling poppy-inspired merchandise, including jute bags created by designer Amanda Wakeley.

All profits will go to the Royal British Legion. Store manager Tom Reilly said: “This year we commemorate the start of World War I and our 20th year of partnership with the Royal British Legion.

“I’d like to thank our customers for their kind donations so far.”
