A flood-hit crematorium is to stay closed for a further month because of damage to its furnaces.

Randalls Park Crematorium, in Randalls Road, Leatherhead, which was inundated during the Christmas Eve floods had hoped to open by the end of this month.

But it has now announced that it is unlikely to open until the end of February following the discovery that its cremators were damaged by the water.

Its grounds and car park were flooded again on Friday night but the level did not reach the flood-damaged chapel this time. Family and friends are still able to visit their loved ones resting place in the grounds.

A spokesperson for Dignity, which runs the crematorium, said: "Our staff are working hard to restore the gardens and clear any debris left by the most recent flood. The repair and refurbishment of the chapel, offices and other public areas is continuing.

"We had discussed the option of constructing a temporary chapel with contractors to enable funerals to take place, however, this was not viable once the specialists from an external organisation inspected the cremators and said they require repair work due to the flood damage suffered in December.

"We have advised all local funeral directors that it is now unlikely that we will be operational until the end of February."

The spokesman said they have ordered new carpets, curtains and other furnishings and contracted an antique furniture restorer to repair oak pews and a lectern.

He said: "Any pews that have to be removed for repair will be temporarily replaced by comfortable seating once we are operational so that funeral services can take place.

"Other public areas of the crematorium such as the waiting area, offices and toilets are now being repaired and redecorated."

Dignity is continuing to provide the option of funeral services at Surrey and Sussex Crematorium in Crawley.
