Tolworth Greenway roadworks will not be finished until late next month, Kingston Council has said.
The work, which began in March, was due to end on September 13.
Most of the remaining work will take place at Tolworth roundabout.
Council leader Councillor Liz Green said: “It is always annoying when any project goes over. Many of our roadworks are completed on time and on budget.”
Tolworth and Hook Rise Councillor Vicki Harris said: “It is starting to come together and it is starting to look absolutely brilliant.
“I think the best description I have heard of it so far is that it is like the Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
Coun Harris said she did not see any safety issue in cyclists and pedestrians sharing the central green strip.
She said: “Shared space is not a new concept. Why should it be a problem in Tolworth Broadway?”
A council spokesman said: “It is a complex project with many new features, and our contractor is working longer hours to get across the finishing line as soon as possible.”
