The Kingston Muslim Association (KMA) has condemned yesterday's brutal machete attack that left a British soldier dead in Woolwich, south east London.

The KMA has issued a statement this morning branding the killing a "sensless act" that "runs contrary to the fundamental teachings of Islam".

The attack happened at around 2.20pm yesterday, close to the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.

A video showing a man with bloody hands weilding a machete and making political statements while another man lies motionless in the street has been seen by millions.

In the footage, the man apologises for women having to see the attack, but adds women "in our land" see similar events every day.

He then calls for the British Government to be overthrown.

Two men were shot and arrested soon after the video was taken.

Responding to the death, the KMA said: "Following the murder of an individual on the streets of London, the KMA strongly condemns this senseless act.

"The murder of any innocent individual runs contrary to the fundamental teachings of Islam.

"We would urge all sections of society to wait until initial investigations are completed before arriving at any conclusions as to the motives behind the attack.

"The strength of our society lies in the unity of its communities, we must be resolute in not allowing anything to divide us.

"We extend our condolences to the victim’s family and friends.

"Our prayers and thoughts are very much with them at this very difficult time."

Prime Minister David Cameron has flown back from France to chair a meeting of Cobra, the government's emergency response committee.

Whitehall has confirmed that the dead man was a serving soldier in the armed forces, and is expected to be named later.

His family has been informed.
