A ‘record’ fake-sardine haul kicked off the Surbiton Food Festival as crowds of more than 500 gathered to celebrate.
The Big Plant marked the start of the event, as residents with green fingers sewed herbs and flowers at the YMCA in Surbiton on Saturday.
The Freshwater Sardine Festival drew a turn-out of over 500 as the event rolled into its second day.
Festival patron Robin Hutchinson said: “This has been a fabulous start to the Surbiton Food Festival with the Big Plant on Saturday and the Sardine festival on Sunday.”
Councillor Barry O’Mahony led a crew in catching a ‘record’ number of false sardines, as crowds sang sea-shanties from the shore of Ravens Ait.

Real sardines were then served to residents.
Mr Hutchinson said: “It was absolutely fantastic. People were just queuing to get them. It really was the most beautiful afternoon.”
