University students are planning to stage a production at Ravens Ait island where audiences will be rowed back and forth for the show.
Students from St Mary’s University College in Twickenham will be performing The Project – a story about food crisis and revolution in a dystopian world.
In 2009 squatters hoping to set up an eco-conference centre occupied the island on the Thames between Kingston and Surbiton for three months before being evicted by police.
The island is now being advertised as a “unique venue catering for bespoke wedding celebrations”.
Drama student Shanice Zambellis who is part of the performing group, said: “We decided to do it in Ravens Ait because we needed to choose a forgotten area or somewhere people had not visited.”
The Project, Ravens Ait, Portsmouth Road, Kingston, May 2 and May 3, 7.30pm, £5, visit dramastmarysreservations.weebly.com/whats-on.html.
