Surbiton’s most environmentally friendly fireman has been uncovered in a nationwide search for Hidden Heroes.
Simon Jakeman, the man behind London's greenest fire station in 2010, was commended in the category of ‘workplace’ by the World Wildlife Fund.
He said: “I am really humbled and honoured to have been nominated and to win. It is brilliant.”
Alongside the title he won £500, to spend on continuing his efforts at the fire station.
He said: “Hopefully I am going to use all that for the roof garden, getting more bird boxes and that kind of thing.
"We are growing more food and the trees I have planted already, pear trees and peach trees. Once the weather gets better we are growing everything again."
He has spoken to other fire crews around London, hoping to inspire them to grow their own fresh food and stay green.
