A man collapsed at Surbiton station yesterday as commuters faced delays of up to two hours.

The man was treated by medics when he passed out on the platform waiting for a train.

Services to London were cancelled.

Nic Losaedo, 34, from Claremont Road, said: "There was a guy who was passed out on the platform.

"Trains were cancelled, and when we did get going it was up to two-hours travelling time.

"The biggest issue was that there was no communication from the station saying what was happening with the trains.

"Eventually they said the service was cancelled.

"There were a lot of people handing out flyers this morning saying weather contributed to the majority of problems arising."

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance said: "We were called at 8.22am to Surbiton railway station. There was a man who fell unconscious.

"We sent one ambulance crew to the scene. The man was in his 20s and he was taken to Kingston Hospital."

Last month South West Trains was criticised by the Office of Rail Regulation for failing to deal with snow and rain over the Christmas period.

This morning the company blamed ice on the tracks handing out a leaflet to commuters this morning.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: “Cold weather conditions caused a build-up of ice on the conductor rail which is used to power trains.

"When ice forms on the rail it affects the power supply to trains and services are prevented from running normally."

She apologised for the disruption and said the company had invested in improving communication with passengers.

Tim Shoveller, managing director at South West Trains, claimed the network had increased its budget by £3 million in the last few weeks, to improve and repair the tracks.

He said the signal box at Feltham was still running on technology from the 1960s but a £50 million renewal of the box was planned.
