A man who stabbed a woman with a kitchen knife seven times on a Croydon Tram has been jailed.
Sri Lankan national Velauthpillai Kumataguru, 30, from Morden, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on August 18 after being found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and two counts of perverting the course of justice.
He must serve at least four years and three months in jail before being considered for parole.
The attack took place on a Croydon tram service near Therapia Lane on July 11, 2005. His victim was 31 and from Croydon.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "This was a frenzied attack.
"The women suffered horrendous injuries and was stabbed in the face and was then stabbed to the arms as she attempted to defend herself.
"The victim knew the defendant and there was a history of two previous attacks by this defendant on this victim culminating in this attack.
"If members of the public had not intervened it could have proved fatal."
