An auction night has ensured there will be not one, but two memorial benches for a "lovely" mother and son killed in a car crash.

Nicola Morris, 29, and Kai Arnold, 11, died in a head-on collision on a bend in Banstead Road, Ewell, on Saturday, July 5.

The fatal crash left the community in shock and tributes flooded in for the well-loved schoolboy and his mum, who grew up in Woodmansterne.

An auction at Woodmansterne Sports Club on Friday raised about £3,800 for a memorial bench in their memory and for a trust fund for Ms Morris’ other young son, Alfie.

On top of this amount, local companies and banks have generously pledged £2,700.

Organiser Pat Johnson, a friend of Ms Morris' mother, thanked the community and businesses for coming together to make the evening a success.

On Friday, Ms Johnson said: "I have been absolutely inundated with donations and friends helping out. I have been astounded by it. It’s gone from a little thing to a huge event."

Separately, Kai's friend Jake Noakes, 13, has been raising money for another memorial bench which would be placed on Woodmansterne Green.

Jake has nearly reached his fundraising target of £1,520 thanks to nearly 100 people who have donated £1,410 online. Any surplus donations will be paid into Alfie's trust fund.

Jake said: "I am raising money for a memorial bench to be put in Woodmansterne near the carved out log as this was where they grew up and also one of their favourite places."
