I left Beavers when I was young. Simply put, because I was bored. However, it has always interested me, as it should enrich young children aged 6-8 and allow them to enjoy themselves in a fun environment. I decided to go and see how my local Beavers group worked.

I went to see the leader of the 17th Purley Beavers, Jill Walters, to see how she runs things up at the Coulsdon Scout hut and ask her a few questions about her opinions and experiences with the Beavers: For how long have you been running the Beavers?

“I have just started my 5th year as Beaver Scout Leader.”

What is your favourite part about running the Beavers?

“My favourite part is when you have a shy, quiet child, who week by week grows in confidence.”

What has been your best trip that you have run with the Beavers?

“My favourite trip is when we go kayaking. Almost of all them have never done it before, they grip their paddles tightly in fear, and then proceed to have a great time – which relieves my worries! (I can’t do kayaking at all and just keep going around in circles!).”

How did you get into leading the Beavers?

“I was asked to be a Beaver Leader. The previous leaders had left, and they were struggling to find a new one. I started off by saying ‘no’! But eventually, I caved in and joined, and I have enjoyed it (mostly) ever since!”

What sort of badges can the Beavers achieve?

“We do a variety of badges – Space, Global Issues, Experiment etc. Every week they come in and participate in small challenges and activities that work towards the many badges available. It is always great to see the smiles on their faces as they come up to me to get their badges!”
