Women’s mental health 

 
 

Mental health is a person’s condition relating to their psychological and emotional well-being. There are various factors effecting mental health in this modern day and age.  

A factor that has only recently started to increase problems in mental health is social media, which is a massive part of teenager’s lives. Teenage girls are more aware of the ‘perfect figure’ due to a high percentage of social media being flooded with pictures of models with edited bodies and faces. Teenage girl's mental health is affected due to them being exploited to unrealistic images of women who all look a certain way. This causes issues with self-confidence which can lead to serious psychological problems including eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Having an eating disorder can have an equal effect on your mental health as on your physical health. Young girls with Anorexia are at more risk of their heart rates being reduced which deprives the brain of oxygen, therefore endangering their lives.  

Poor mental health can cause depression which interferes with normal functioning, it affects your mood and thoughts. Women are statistically 40% more likely to develop depression than men, because of factors such as hormones and other factors that only apply to the female sex. This means that women need to  

The symptoms of worrying mental health are big changes in energy levels, a change in sleep patterns and are reluctant to eat. These symptoms all overlap as, if girls are not consistently eating their energy levels will fluctuate therefore changing their sleeping patterns. Which may cause their school work may suffer due to a lack of concentration this would limit their ability to revise for exams. This could affect their careers in the future as they may not be able to find a stable job because of the possibility of their mental health being unstable. 

People today are becoming more aware of the importance of mental health, although 1 in 15 people have made a suicide attempt in their life. Most of suicide attempts are influenced by how mental health problems are dealt with. Unfortunately, some people are still oblivious to how serious mental health is. People need to become more aware of the impacts of poor mental health.
