Parkrun is a healthy, sociable start to your weekend which brings people together from around the world.

Parkrun was started in Bushy Park, south-west London, in 2004 by Paul Sinton-Hewitt, who wanted to spend more time running with his friends and have fun doing what he loved. The first race comprised only 13 runners. Today, because of its overwhelming success and inclusive approach, Parkrun operates in 20 countries across five continents, following the same format: a timed five kilometre route which is free to enter and open to anyone.

Last month, when I was at Bushy Parkrun supporting my family, I found out that visiting runners came from as far away as Alaska and Australia! I spoke to David who lives in Adelaide, Australia and regularly participates in his local Parkrun there. He said, “I just had to do the original Bushy Parkrun whilst I am visiting family in the U.K. as this is where it all started”. Then I asked him what makes Bushy Parkrun so special. He replied, “It is the perfect location for an early morning run – opposite the historic Hampton Court Palace and the River Thames. The course is flat, fast and I am surrounded by over one thousand people of all ages and fitness levels, all raring to run, jog or walk”.

Currently there are 64 different Parkruns within the M25, all providing the opportunity for a sociable start to the weekend and a great way to improve your physical and mental health. You never know who might meet there!
