The “Global Future report” says the UK requires a minimum of 200,000 more immigrants every year.

The greatest reason for the UK leaving the EU was due to this immigration issue and the Conservative government now intends to reduce the maximum number of net immigrants into the UK down to 100,000.

The Conservative government seems to be on course for its goal, as suggested by the most recent study published by the ONS, or Office of National Statistics. Their most recent figure shows that the net migration of EU citizens into the UK is an increase of 90,000. Although this seems like a lot, it is in decline compared to the nearly 200,000 in 2015.

The reason for this need for the immigrants is due to an aging population. This fact, coupled with the fact that the number of skilled workers dropped by 58,000 puts more strains on public services like the NHS even though the Treasury is investing a lot more money into it.

In fact, the ratio of working population to the retired population dropped from 5.5 : 1 in 1950, to 3.5 : 1 in 2015. This report is from the previously mentioned report and it includes migrants of working age that have stalled the fall a bit.

This trend is so bad that by 2050 the number of people older than 65 is expected to double that of the same age group in the early 2000s. The number of people over 85 is expected to quadruple in the same time frame increasing only the issue.

The report criticizes the dishonesty of the 2 major parties in presenting this issue to the public.

In light of the aims of the government, how might this issue be solved?

The extent of this problem has to be shown to the public for the UK not to suffer from an aging population. The UK must also accept multiculturalism as a necessity in the modern world and thus the government has to be more lenient with its view on immigration.

However, the British population has quite clearly become xenophobic as it voted to leave the European Union. Thus, it will be difficult to maintain a healthy balance of working class people as well as pleasing the people who fear the immigrants.

What is quite surprising, however, is the fact that these immigrants have not affected the employment rate in the UK. according to the government, the unemployment rates are still at a record low 4.2% and the employment rates remain at a record high of 75.6%. Thus, this fact can be used to sway the public’s opinion on the benefits of having immigrants in a country with such an aging population.

The xenophobia will be reduced as these figures demonstrate how immigrants do not actually affect job opportunities in a negative way.
