A choir-singing, humanist environmental volunteer has been nominated as an unsung hero.

Marilyn Mason, 67, from Kingston, has been heavily involved with Transition Town Kingston (TTK), a group that promotes green living through schemes such as food and energy advice.

She said: “I think environmental issues such as biodiversity and climate change are the most important problems facing humankind, and TTK is a way of doing practical projects to try to mitigate it a bit.

“I am a humanist and I think one ought to try to do some good in the world.

“I am doing all this because I am retired and I want to keep doing interesting and worthwhile things.

“Lots of them have got quite strong sociable elements to them.”

Mrs Mason’s other projects include a make-do-and-mend-style group called A Stitch In Time.

She said: “It is a sociable thing. People come and have a cup of tea and a chat and sew.

“They are very glad to fix their favourite pair of trousers or a jacket.

“Not everybody wants to live in a throwaway culture.”

She also helps to run Euphonix, a community choir that rehearses and performs at the Rose Theatre, and the Kingston Philosophy Cafe.

Friend and fellow volunteer Martin Birley said: “She pops up absolutely everywhere – she is an extremely active volunteer.

“I do not know how she finds the time for that.

“She is a real pillar of the community in my view.

“She seems to be on endless committees driving things forward and making things happen.

“When she is not doing anything else she can be found selling teas and coffees in the church to raise funds for one cause or another.

“She is intelligent, energetic, and good at managing.”
