Footballers might have short memories, but Kingstonian skipper Alan Inns insists his side will heed the lessons of last season’s run-in collapse.

Ks missed out on the Ryman Premier Division play-offs after a disastrous final month of the campaign saw them collect only one point from their final five league matches, having been well placed for a top five finish at the start of April.

“Footballers have short memories - we take a couple of months off and all is forgotten,” said Inns, ahead of Saturday’s opening pre-season friendly at Whyteleafe.

“We will take on board the lessons from that run-in, but it is all about making a fresh start.

Eager: Ks boss tommy Williams is keen to add to the club's trophy haul next term

“By the time the season starts we will be raring to go.”

Ks returned to pre-season training at the weekend with a number of players hoping to win one of two spaces still left to fill in boss Tommy Williams’ squad.

And Inns admitted it will be dog-eat-dog for players looking to impress over the coming weeks “Training has been going well and we are looking all right,” he said.

“There a few new signings and quite a few players trying out, some of them I’ve played against before.

“Tommy knew who he wanted to keep and who he wanted to sign,” he added.

“It is about getting the balance right between playing ability and attitude. Sometimes we have got that wrong in the past.

“There is no need to rush in, so those on trial will have to work hard through pre-season.”
