Mayor of Merton Martin Whelton recently unveiled a plaque at Barratt Southern Counties’ SW19 Sanctuary mixed-use development, to mark its formal naming as Reynolds Gate, and the naming of the six apartment buildings that provide more than 500 new homes for the area, including affordable housing.

In homage to the heroes of Wimbledon FC, on whose Plough Lane ground the development stands, all the names will be instantly recognisable to Dons fans.

Reynolds Gate owes its name to Eddie Reynolds, the striker who took the club to FA Amateur Cup victory in 1963.

In his speech, Mr Mayor, Councillor Martin Whelton said: “There is no doubt that Reynolds Gate is a very attractive development that will enhance the area.

"Affordable housing is in huge demand in Merton, and the 240 affordable homes being provided here will give local people a real chance of getting on the property ladder.

"I also welcome the retail, commercial and office space that will provide valuable facilities as well as jobs for the local community.”

The names of the six apartment blocks acknowledge the legacy of managers, coaches, players and directors involved with the club, namely Allen Batsford, Stanley Reed, Harry Stannard, Dave Bassett, Lawrie Sanchez and Alan Cork.

Batsford House: Allen Batsford, Manager 1974-1978

Reed House: Stanley Reed, Chairman 1983-2000

Stannard House: Harry Stannard, Player & Vice President 1935-2000

Bassett House: Dave Bassett, Player, Coach & Manager 1974-1987

Lawrie House: Lawrie Sanchez, Player & Coach 1984-1999

Cork House: Alan Cork, Player 1978-1992

In addition to Allen Batsford and Lawrie Sanchez, the ceremony was attended by relatives of Wimbledon heroes, local dignitaries including Councillor George Reynolds and Councillor Philip Jones of Merton Borough Council, representatives of the Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association, numerous Wimbledon FC fans and senior executives from Barratt Southern Counties.

“Plough Lane has now been immortalised in the memories of many local residents and sporting fans who follow the beautiful game,” commented Trevor Sawyer, managing director of Barratt Southern Counties.

“Reynolds Gate is a striking new community, and we hope that living here will create new memories for its residents.

"It has established its popularity already, with 80 per cent of the apartments sold.”

Barratt’s Dream Start offer is available to purchasers at Reynolds Gate and means they can own 100 per cent of a property whilst only finding 75 per cent of the cost

. The deferred 25 per cent is interest-free, with no rental element.

On sale, or at any time up to 10 years, whichever is earlier, Barratt is repaid 25 per cent of the sale proceeds or of the ruling open-market value.

Barratts say that the development blends a riverside location with attractive contemporary design.

All the apartments have balcony views, many over the inviting gardens and a lively communal verandah.

There are also approximately 400 parking spaces available for residents; a rare commodity in London. Many of the homes are available for immediate occupation.

The mixed-use development will also make provision for 45,000 sq ft of retail space, creating both necessary facilities and employment opportunities for the existing community.

Prices at SW19 Sanctuary start from £196,995 for a studio apartment. For further information please call the sales and marketing suite open daily from 10 am to 6 pm on 020 8947 1137 or visit www.barratthomes.co.uk
