Tooting & Mitcham's interim manager Jamie Martin has six games to prove he has the credentials to become the permanent boss.

And he is confident he will be given the job long term, despite losing his first two league games in charge – 2-0 at home to Walton Casuals, and 1-0 at Eastbourne Town.

Martin has rung the changes since taking over from the sacked Roberto Forzoni, bringing in former Bradford City striker Jamie Lawrence and winger Anthony Joseph, and releasing Kai Bichard, Seon Headley and Ellis Wilson-Joseph.

Martin says at least two more players will be released, and that he is on the verge of taking on an experienced centre back.

He said: “I spoke to the chairman after the [Eastbourne] game, and he was quite pleased with the progress we’re making considering I have only in the position for a week. He said we were unfortunate not to get anything out of the game.

“The understanding at the moment is that I had six games in charge as interim manager, so I definitely have another four to go.

“But I am quite confident, after speaking to the chairman that it will be long term because he’s given an indication that it will be.”

He added: “Jamie [Lawrence] and Anthony [Joseph] made a difference on Saturday but I am also looking to bring in an experienced centre back in the next couple of days.

“We badly need an experienced player in the back – I am hoping to get one for the Herne Bay game on Wednesday but if not, definitely by the Ramsgate on Saturday.”

New boy Lawrence - known for his multi-coloured haircuts - certainly brings experience to the side having made 156 appearances for Bradford, playing in the Premier League under Chris Kamara.

But at 41, some might suggest he is too old to be of help, an opinion Martin does not share.

He said: "Jamie is probably fitter than any of the lads here. He's a monster of an athlete. He trains every day on his own and hasn't lost any of his ability."
