The promotion race in the Isthmian Premier League is really warming up and Carshalton Athletic’s recent form has the club right in the mix, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

The Robins have won four and drawn one of their last six matches to put them firmly in the top five as the season enters its final lap.

But the margin for error is slight as, following a 2-0 home victory over struggling Cheshunt last Saturday, Carshalton are now one of three clubs sitting on 62 points.

On-loan forward Lewis White, who grabbed his fourth goal for the club during that win, believes he and his teammates are guarded against complacency however.

“We’ve spoken recently about our character and, since losing at East Thurrock, we scored in added time to earn a draw at Margate and then beat Horsham 4-0,” said White.

“Cheshunt were tough to break down but we worked hard and will always back ourselves to score a goal.

“But that is the level the management expect us to be at now and we have to keep delivering until the end of the season.”

The first-half between Carshalton and Cheshunt was a tight affair but White broke the deadlock on 41 minutes.

The forward showed good strength to outmuscle full back Ibrahim Diallo on a long pass before coolly nutmegging the familiar face of goalkeeper Preston Edwards.

“I saw the bounce on the pass put some doubt in the defender’s mind so I knew I could get in front of him,” added White.

“Preston and I are from Dulwich Hamlet where we both started the season, but I didn’t know he was playing for Cheshunt until we lined up, so I won’t dwell on the finish too much!”

Cheshunt went down to 10 men just after the hour mark, as centre back Tyler McKenzie cynically scythed down Ricky Korboa, but the home fans had to wait until the 80th minute to breathe easily.

Forward Christie Pattisson showed great individual skill to get away from two opponents before hitting his fifteenth goal of the season in from 25 yards.

Carshalton Athletic now have two away games on the spin starting at bottom-of the-table Brightlingsea Regent this coming Saturday.

“A few clubs around us have games in hand so we have got to keep applying pressure by ensuring our rivals have to keep winning too,” said White.

“If we keep up this form in the next two away games then we should be fine in terms of at least being in the play-offs.”
