Kalvin Phillips put in a Man Of The Match display for Leeds as they left Brentford’s Griffin Park with a point on Tuesday.

The midfielder, drafted back into Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI after serving a three match suspension, was the stand out player between the promotion chasing outfits and gave evidence as to why he’s courted by Premiership clubs and touted for international honours.

One man who saw the 24-year-old displaying his range of attributes, from his raking cross-field passing to his breaking up of play was Brentford’s Christian Norgaard.

“He’s a very good player,” the Dane said.

“It was his first game back and you could see he had energy, he played like he felt he was on top of his game.

“He is doing a really good job, he was good on Tuesday dictating the game and catching a lot of second balls."

Surrey Comet:

Norgaard plays a similar position for Brentford as Phillips does for the Whites, shielding the back line and often the catalyst for a forward surge.

The 25-year-old former Fiorentina man says he’s watched Phillips a number of times this season as he looks to add more strings to his bow.

“You want to look up the leagues as high as possible and learn from the best, but you need to look at some of the players that play in the same position in the same division and how they do against the same opponent.

“He’s playing the same role as me, I wouldn’t say he plays like me and I play like he does, but whenever I watch Leeds play he’s the guy in that position so of course you look at his way of playing with and without the ball.”

Surrey Comet:

Norgaard has become influential in Brentford’s midfield under Thomas Frank, cementing his place as the fulcrum in the three man midfield he’s started 26 of the Bees’ 32 games this season, captaining the side once.

“I started out disappointingly,” he admitted.

“Last season the team did very well in a 3-4-3, and I think that’s why we started out the season in that system, but we didn’t get the points we should’ve and didn’t perform as high as we had hoped for.

“But we changed system and we played in a different way, that made me a bit more defensive which suits me better than being a box to box midfielder.

“Thomas knows my best position, and he knew it was my best position.

“We had to change something and adjust for the players in the team, including myself, and I think players like Josh (Dasilva), Mathias (Jensen), it seems like they are fitting very well in a three man midfield.”
