Leeds United is the fixture Brentford’s Julian Jeanvier looks forward to more than any.

The simple reason being ‘because they’re the biggest and one of the best teams in the league’ he says.

Wednesday’s trip to Elland Road will be ‘tough’ according to the 27-year-old, but he’s feeling more confident than last year, despite taking four points from Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the league last campaign.

“This season we are more solid than last season,” Jeanvier said.

“I think we have done well so far this season, we won away in a tough game at Middlesbrough, but we played well and were solid and that’s good for the future.”

Surrey Comet:

Thomas Frank’s side have suffered a mixed bag of results in their opening three fixtures, with an opening day defeat at home to Birmingham, a victory on the road at ‘Boro, and a 1-1 draw with Hull City at the weekend.

Despite the indifferent start to the season, Jeanvier believes the Bees have got rid of the defensive frailties that many thought they had last season.

Selling Chris Mepham and Ezri Konsa in the last two transfer windows to Bournemouth and Aston Villa respectively, Jeanvier is the sole survivor of a backline last season’s backline.

Having started all three of Brentford’s fixtures, the Guinean feels more at ease this term, citing the arrivals of Pontus Jansson and Ethan Pinnock as the reason.

“I feel more confident because they have a lot of experience,” he added.

“Chris and Ezri were very good players but they were young, but this season we will manage the games better, especially when we lead, I think this season we will be better.”

The buzz around Griffin Park is one of optimism, with many outside the club talking up their chances of promotion, and Jeanvier is keen to reach that next level – The Premier League.

“That’s why I came for, I want to go to the Premiership, and with this team," he continued.

“I’ll do my best to get there, it will be difficult as it’s a difficult Championship so we have to be focussed from the start to the end.

“But I think we can, we’ve got a lot of good players and a good team.

“It depends on us, if we do as well as we know we can, we will go up.”

Brentford’s promotion aspirations will lie heavily on Ollie Watkins this season, the attacker asked by Frank to fill the Neal Maupay 20-goal-a-season void created after his move to Brighton in the summer.

With two goals in his last two games, including the equaliser against Hull, Jeanvier believes it’s a challenge he’s capable of.

“We have lost a good striker, but Ollie can play there and has proved he can score.

“I think we have a lot of good players who can score, and then maybe the club can bring another striker in January, maybe, but I’m happy and I’m sure we can compete with any team.”
