Brentford aren’t far away from making that next step and challenging for promotion under Thomas Frank according to Marcus Gayle.

The former Bees and AFC Wimbledon forward feels the Griffin Park outfit are on the right path in order to make the step up to Premiership level.

After brushing Leeds United aside 2-0 on Easter Monday, Gayle believes the ethos at the club is ‘spot on’ in order to compete at a higher level of the Championship opposed to their current position of 15th.

“We need a couple of players and get rid of those hanging around the fringes,” he said.

“I’m sure the club have identified who they want to come in, and they’re pretty clear in who they don’t want to leave.

“The fact they’ve got that strategy at this time of the year is a good thing.

“There’s good selection from the B team and there’s no loan players, it’s filled with B team players that have done well this year.

“There’s a lot of trust between the manager and them to get the chance and step up.”

Brentford have beaten Stoke, Hull, QPR, Aston Villa and now Leeds at home, but like many, Gayle has pointed out their away day blues as to why their lowly league position is where it is, with only a win at Middlesbrough a real highlight this campaign.

“It’s no secret, that’s the main factor, the away results.

“If you’re looking to get promoted you’re looking to win half your away games.

“At the moment they’ve only won 15 this season so they need to get another eight or ten to get in to the play offs or the automatic places.

“But we aren’t too far away.

“The team will mature, if we can retain some players they’ve got a chance.”
