Dillon Phillips save from Bristol Rovers’ Jonson Clarke-Harris is a contender for ‘save of the season’ but that’s his job according to his manager.

Phillips has kept loan-signing Chris Maxwell away from his number one jersey over the last three months, seeing his stock rise with a number of eye-catching performances.

Aston Villa’s Jed Steer was preferred in goal for the opening half of the campaign but when he was re-called by his parent club Phillips took his opportunity to make his mark, and it hasn’t’ gone unnoticed by Lee Bowyer.

“He made a brilliant save against Bristol, but that’s what he’s paid to do,” said Bowyer.

“Dillon has been great since he’s come back in, and I think he’s improved immensely.

“(Goalkeeper coach Andy) Marshall has to take credit, if you look at the goalie at the start of the season and now, he's done brilliantly.

Phillips, 23, signed a long-term contract with Charlton earlier this year and the confidence the club have shown in doing so has rubbed off on the keeper, none more so than the fine save in the goalless draw at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

“I saw it late,” he said of Clark-Harris’ free-kick.

“It either went through the wall or over the wall - I can’t really remember - and luckily enough it held up in the pitch and I clawed it from behind me.”

The point kept The Addicks fifth in the table, eight points behind second placed Barnsley with eight games to play, and Phillips believe there’s still fight in the dressing room to gatecrash the automatic places.

“Anything can happen, can’t it?

“Getting into the top two is out of our hands, really. We just have to keep winning games and if they (Barnsley) drop points, they drop points.

“We will either take some good form into the play-offs or get into that top two and whatever happens, we will be there and willing to fight for it.”
