Marks & Spencer (M&S) is modernising its stores with a major aisle change, potentially spelling the end of traditional price tags for customers.
M&S is set to replace traditional paper price tags with digital labels in a number of new stores initially, with further rollout potential in the future.
The retailer has announced plans to introduce Bluetooth-enabled electronic shelf labels (ESL) as part of a wider technology upgrade.
This move is part of a partnership with retail technology firm Vusion, which will see the rollout of its Connected Store platform in a number of new stores as part of an initial deployment.
Roy Horgan, CEO UK & Ireland at Vusion, said: "We are pleased to be working with M&S as it continues to invest in its store estate and colleague experience.
"Our Connected Store platform is designed to help retailers improve operational execution while providing the infrastructure to support future innovation."
The digital labels use e-paper screens to display pricing and product information, allowing updates to be made automatically and remotely via the cloud.
The technology also includes location-aware features, such as flashing labels to help staff quickly find products, with some models featuring tools like AI inventory monitoring cameras and restock alerts.
According to M&S, the "technology is designed to help connect store systems, product information and colleague activity more effectively."
