Tadworth residents who have been withough electricity since yesterday are being helped by the Red Cross. Volunteers from the charity have been working to help vulnerable and elderly residents stranded without electricity in Hatch Gardens and Muirfeld Road, offering them tea, coffee and hot meals.

Speaking this morning, retired firefighter and Red Cross volunteer John Drudge said that the snow was at least six inches in some places.

He said: “We travelled through Leatherhead and it is a lot worse in Tadworth.

“A lot of elderly residents are stranded in their homes.

“I think it is going to get a lot worse as the weather seems to show no sign of slowing down.”

The bad weather has caused disruption throughout the day causing services in Epsom, Ewell and Banstead to suffer and schools to close early.

Epsom and Ewell Borough Council has issued a statement saying that the popular meals on wheels service is being prioritised with deliveries by 4x4 vehicles, but many social centres were forced to close at lunchtime.

Waste and recycling collection is also operating a restricted service dependent on the weather conditions.

The Beacon and Woodmansterne schools in Banstead and Vale Primary in Epsom all closed at 1.30pm due to the difficult conditions.

Surrey County Council have warned that many school bus services in Redhill, Reigate and Banstead are disrupted by snowfall.

Travel conditions continue to worsen with the 480 Epsom bus service from Tattenham Corner to Preston suspended.

Road users across the region should continue to expect delays throughout the day due to traffic and poor road conditions which are likely to worsen as the afternoon progresses.
