An Epsom charity which helps disabled people try out riding has celebrated its 50-year anniversary this month.

Epsom Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) celebrated the occasion on September 15 with a free event for the community.

The charity, which provides opportunities for more than 350 riders, celebrated the commitment of the RDA’s team in the best way possible way with live music, tea and cakes.

Gill McPherson, Group Chair said “None of this would be possible without the consistent and generous commitment of our fantastic team of volunteers, and support of our community. Thank you!”

Over 300 volunteers, families and riders were involved in the special day, which was marked at its home at St Ebba’s Farm in Hook Road.

Councillor John Beckett, Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, presented over fifty awards to the large dedicated team of Young Volunteers who have put their time and efforts aside to continue the charity’s work.

Amongst those who were awarded were Lynda Sears and Jill Messer, the charity’s longest serving volunteers, who received special recognition for their 48 and 47 years of service respectively.

The charity, which is completely funded through donations said it appreciates the help and ongoing support from their volunteers and the community.

The RDA has come a long way, first starting out in 1969 with just four volunteers and a Shetland pony called Bubbles and now running a large farm with 14 ponies operating 7 days a week.

Their efforts were recognised and have been presented a cheque of £6000 raised from donations by Music in Nork Park.
