A brave 80-year old mum from Epsom said she burst into laughter after shaving her head for Macmillan Cancer Support today (September 28).

Sheila Matthews took on the challenge at Epsom Community and Wellbeing Centre this morning to honour her late daughter Tracey, who died of cancer when she was just 44.

Mrs Matthews said: "I have had to laugh it off because it was emotional. She was 44 when she died. That was just over 14 years ago.

"It has been one big laugh. A lot of the women in the centre are roughly in the same age group as me. All said ‘you are so brave’.

“I don’t think I am brave but they insisted. Mind you it’s very short.

She added: “The response from the people has been very good. They all gave £2.50. One lady gave me a hundred pounds.”

Nova Macdonald, assistant manager at Epsom community and wellbeing centre said: “Everyone at the centre were cheering her on through-out.

“She has raised nearly £500 through kind donations and sponsorship from family, friends and staff at the centre.

“This amount is only the start as more donations are coming through the door.”

Mrs Matthews added: “I thought I was going to jump out of a plane and they were not too keen, so I thought ‘what could I do.’

“I just went into the office and said ‘I want my head shaved off’.”
