Mr Keane secured 68 percent of today’s vote, with 766 ballots cast for him, securely beating the other candidates.

The Conservative candidate Alastair Whitby took second place at 20.2 percent, while the Liberal Democrat Julian Freeman and Labour candidate Rosalind Godson trailed behind, at 8.2 percent and 3.6 percent respectively.

The by-election saw 1126 votes cast and a turnout of 24.93 percent.
