A transformed Leatherhead playground which now includes a sensory garden, trampoline, zip wire, lookout tower and more is now open.

Residents and councillors were invited to the official opening of the Forty Foot Recreation Ground on October 20.

The winning design was awarded to play company Kompan after two public consultations were held earlier this year.

Work on-site began in September and it opened on the first day of October half term.

Other new features include talking tubes, a double-bay swing and visual aid panels.

Mole Valley District Council worked closely with Woodlands School, in Forty Foot Road, whose pupils have a range of disabilities and are regular visitors to the playground, and communications specialist Tobii Dynavox prior to installing visual aid panels.

The panels feature play-related pictures to help as visual cues and enable children who struggle with communication to better interact with their parent, guardian or other children.

Tina Voizey, education manager at Tobii Dynavox, said: Incorporating communication boards gives everyone the opportunity to express themselves. Something so many children and families take for granted has just become a whole lot easier for those who have speech, language and communication difficulties.

“We are delighted they have proved to be such a popular addition at Meadowbank.”

Cllr Lucy Botting, executive member for wellbeing, said: “The completed Forty Foot playground is another outstanding example of communities helping to shape and enhance play facilities in their local area.

“We will continue to invest in play provision that is exciting and inclusive, ensuring residents of all abilities and a range of ages have the opportunity to participate in play and wellbeing activities.”
