A Ewell infant school will become an all-through primary school as the county council attempts to meet a growing need for school places.
An additional 240 places will be created at Ewell Grove Infant and Nursery School in West Street after Surrey County Council’s cabinet approved the expansion last week.
The school currently has 180 infant places and 26 full-time nursery places, but after incremental expansion starting in September 2017 it will have 420 primary school places.
Linda Kemeny, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for schools, skills and educational achievement, told councillors on February 28, out that significant development works would need to be carried out at the school as it is on a restricted site in a conservation area with poor access for vehicles.
She added: “Growing demand for school places means that Surrey needs to create an extra 11,000 over the next five years and these projects are important steps towards that goal.
“At a time when our finances are also under huge pressure from rising demand for other services such as adult social care, we need to be properly funded to provide the additional school places that are required across the county.”
From January 2017: Four schools in Elmbridge and Epsom to be expanded to meet rising demand for places
From March 2016: Epsom residents' traffic concerns over Danetree Junior School expansion
The expansion at Ewell Grove is the final part of Danetree Primary School – formerly known as Danetree County Junior School – admitted an additional 90 children in September 2016, and West Ewell Infant School and Nursery will become a primary school in September 2017.
The three expansions would create 360 extra school places overall.
