Banstead-born Are You Being Served? actor Nicholas Smith has died aged 81.

Mr Smith who died on Sunday, December 6, had been in hospital for seven weeks following a fall at home.

He was the last-surviving member of the original cast of the popular BBC sitcom, which ran from 1972 to 1985 and starred John Inman, Mollie Sugden, Frank Thornton and Wendy Richards.

Are You Being Served? was set in fictitious department store Grace Brothers and often attracted audiences of more than 20 million.

Mr Smith played store manager Cuthbert "Jug Ears" Rumbold, who endured jokes about the shape of his ears.

His agents at Michelle Braidman Associates said: "It is with great sadness we can confirm that our client, the actor Nicholas Smith, passed away yesterday.

"He was a lovely man and a terrific actor. He will be much missed by all who knew him.

"Our thoughts are with his family."

His daughter is actress Catherine Russell, who plays Serena Campbell in Holby City.

Mr Smith was born in Banstead on March 5, 1934.

His other TV roles included parts in Doctor Who, The Frost Report, The Saint, The Avengers, Z Cars and more recently in Last of the Summer Wine.
