In my letter published in the Epsom Guardian last week, Tree shock, I had wrongly assumed that the tree planted in memory of suffragette Emily Davison at the Old Cottage Hospital in Epsom had died through lack of watering.
Whilst being sorry for that wrong assumption I was saddened to read Emily's tree is dying (Epsom Guardian, July 18) that the tree is actually suffering from verticillium wilt.
I note that, if necessary, the tree will be replaced and I, for one, would be more than happy to make a small contribution to any replacement.
Emily's tragic death in the fight for the right to vote for women is an important part of our local heritage and the tree is an important part of our local tribute to her justifiable cause.
