I was sorry to read that some members of the public are upset because their favourite design did not win the commission for the Emily Davison sculpture.

However, according to the brief, the sculpture was never intended to be a "memorial to Emily Davison" as Adele Rowe suggests but a tribute to the sacrifices and achievements by women.

Mary Branson's design, suggesting the circle and cross (the internationally recognised symbol for women) could not really be any more representative of women and the purple, green and white all thoughtfully featured, are the suffragette colours.

Second, the rules of the selection process, which were published at the Ebbisham Centre alongside all the designs, clearly stated the public vote would not be binding. I appreciate that some people who may not have read all this information may feel aggrieved that their preferred design was not chosen, but surely we need to trust the artists on the panel to choose something that meets the brief and that will remain on the site for generations to come. I think Emily Davison would be very proud that everything she stood for will be represented by such a powerful and imposing sculpture.
