Surrey Police are cracking down on punishments for drink-driving as the long summer nights continue.


Social events over summer months can be a temptation to drink and police have urged drivers to avoid alcohol altogether – as convictions will result in fines and driving disqualifications.


Statistics from the Association of Chief Police Officers showed that out of 83,224 drivers tested during a national campaign in June, 4,857 of them either refused, failed or tested positive on breathalyser tests.


Despite the figures being a minor improvement on last year’s, they do not do much to change the fact that nearly four people a month are killed on Surrey’s roads in drink-related incidents.


Councillor Kay Hammond said: “Keep in mind that even after a couple of drinks in the evening, there’s a good chance you could be over the legal drink-drive limit the morning after.”
