Edward Davey has spoken of the impact of rising energy bills on households as he adjusts to his first day as energy secretary.

His promotion to the cabinet was announced shortly after Chris Huhne stood down over allegations he lied about a speeding offence.

Speaking this afternoon on the steps of the department for energy and climate change in front of reporters and photographers, he paid tribute to his predecessor Chris Huhne's "vision for a green economy".

He said: "I've now got to take up the challenges of climate change, the challenge of energy security and I'm particularly conscious of the impact on consumer's households across the country of high energy bills."

He said: "I want us to have a green economy where there's lots of green jobs to help grow our economy."

Mr Davey has campaigned against air pollution in Tolworth alongside the A3 during his time as Kingston and Surbiton MP.

Earlier today Zac Goldsmith, his Conservative counterpart for Richmond Park which covers north Kingston, said: "Congratulations Ed Davey, and good luck. Lots to do..."

Ian Hardiker tweeted: "Great news for Ed Davey MP, another Nottm High School success, looking forward to a scrap with @edballsmp like used to do in the playground.

Mr Davey was followed for a year by filmmaker Claude Green for a film about the life of a British MP.
