Two binmen have been taken to hospital after the lorry they were travelling overturned spectacularly earlier today.

The driver and passenger were both treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to Croydon University Hospital following the smash in Cuthbert Road, Croydon.

Witnesses said the vehicle overturned while taking a corner just before 9am.

Minicab passenger Andy Tullett was driven behind the lorry as it travelled from West Croydon bus station into Pitlake.

He said: "Thankfully he overturned where he did.

"Had it been up at the West Croydon traffic lights when he turned right he would have quite possibly injured or killed the pedestrians on the pavement.

"Both driver and passenger seemed okay but quite stunned by what had happened and with only minor looking injuries.

"I called 999 spoke to the operators and then left them in the care of the locals as I had to get to work."

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said although both men were taken to hospital neither appeared seriously hurt.

A Croydon Council spokesman said:"As a precautionary measure, two members of Veolia staff were taken to hospital following the accident involving a refuse collection vehicle on Wednesday morning.

"Both are undergoing checks, but their injuries are not viewed as life threatening.

"As a matter of course, the emergency services attended the scene.

"The vehicle was removed during the afternoon and returned to the nearby Stubbs Mead depot.

"The extent of the damage has yet to be assessed.

"Veolia has started an investigation to identify the cause of the accident."
